Teaching Assistant for MAR 104: Oceanography

Professor: Kurt Bretsch, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook Southampton

Course Description: An examination of the World Ocean and the biological, geological, chemical, and physical processes that control its major features and the life that inhabits it. Students will also explore historical and contemporary human interactions with the marine environment. Suitable for non-science majors.

Duties: I graded exams and quizzes and ran two weekly supplemental instruction (SI) sessions. Students who did poorly on quizzes attended SI to improve their grade. Alternatively, students attended SI to ask questions about course material and review for exams.

Teaching Assistant for BIO 204

Course Coordinators: Marvin O'Neal, Joan Miyazaki, and Debbie Spikes

Course Description: First in the foundational laboratory sequence for all biology students, and students in related fields. Students will experience the laboratory process, research process, a wide range of laboratory tools, methods, skills, learn to read and write scientific presentations, and collaborate in formal inquiry.

Duties: I attended weekly lab preparation sessions, prepared my own lesson plans, taught 3 hour lab sessions, and assigned and graded homework and lab reports. Students did not have direct contact with the course coordinators.

Tutoring (Educational Opportunities Program)

Manager: Jarvis Watson, Senior Counselor, Educational Opportunities Program, Stony Brook Southampton

Duties: I was the Science and Math Tutor for students in the Educational Opportunities Program at Stony Brook Southampton. Their courses included: algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, environmental science, oceanography, and anthropology. I met with the students individually 2-3 times per week to help them with basic study skills as well as course material. EOP works with economically disadvantaged students whose academic preparation in high school did not adequately prepare them for university, but who have the potential to succeed.
