Research

I have a Master’s degree in Marine Biology from Nova Southeastern University in Florida where I was involved in research on reef corals. Currently, I am attending a PhD program at SoMAS and my thesis research focuses on a disease of hard clams (quahogs), Mercenaria mercenaria, caused by a protistan parasite named Quahog Parasite Unknown
(QPX). I examine molecular mechanisms of the QPX infection process and attempt to identify and characterize virulence molecules secreted by QPX to facilitate its invasion and propagation through clam tissue. I am also interested in the parasite's reproductive biology, genetic diversity, and variation of virulence among QPX isolates from different geographic locations.
