I. Course Aims
and Objectives:
Aims: This course is
intended to provide students and researchers in public health with an overview
of the interdisciplinary field of health services research (HSR); to synthesize
research methods learned in the program; and to develop skills necessary for
scientific research relevant to medicine and public health.
Learning
Objectives: By the end of this course, you should be able to:
1. Understand the
historical development of health services research and its multidisciplinary
nature.
2. Illustrate the
basic concepts and methods of social research as applied to important issues in
HSR and articulate major theoretical foundations of HSR.
3. Critically
read and evaluate research design, methodological approaches, and conclusions
of HSR studies.
4. Develop,
complete, and present a research project using HSR methods.
II.
Pre-requisites:
HPH506
and HPH507 (Biostatistics I & II), HPH514 (Epidemiology), and HPH562 (Data
Management and Informatics) are required. HPH560 (Advanced Biostatistics) is
recommended. Discuss with the instructor if you have not met the
pre-requisites.
III. Format:
Classroom
activities include one lecture/discussion session (Tuesdays 1:30pm-4:30pm) each
week as indicated on the schedule. Class attendance is required. You will be responsible for the course
material taught in class.

Grades
will be computed as follows:
Homework 25 points
Proposal 25
points
Final paper 30 points
Presentation 20 points
The
final letter grade will be determined from the total points scored from the
assignments and examinations. All exams are open-book, open-notes.
